About Counterlock

Counterlock answers one question for every Deadlock hero, item and matchup: what beats it? It's free, and the core stats will stay free.

Where the data comes from

Match data comes from deadlock-api.com, a community project that collects public Deadlock match results. Valve has no public API for Deadlock. Hero and item stats refresh hourly; player pages load on demand and are cached for 10 minutes.

How the numbers work

  • Win rates are shrunk toward an average by sample size, so 70% over 40 games doesn't outrank 54% over 40,000. Every table shows its sample size.
  • Tiers come from that shrunk win rate within a rank bracket: S is 2.5+ points above even, A 1+, B within 1, C 1–2.5 below, D further.
  • Build grades compare players using an in-game build with the hero's average this patch: S+ is 4+ points better, D is 2.5+ worse. Builds with under 100 games are ungraded.
  • Counters and counter items compare a win rate in matches against a hero with the usual win rate, so a hero or item that's strong everywhere doesn't look like a counter to everyone.
  • The ban advisor weighs how often a hero is on the enemy team by how much they lower your heroes' win rates.
  • Patch impact compares each hero's and item's win rate in the 7 days before a patch with the days after. Only changes bigger than twice their standard error, on 1,000+ games each side, are called out. Buffs and nerfs in the notes are read automatically from the numbers and the stat (a longer cooldown is a nerf).

The Counterlock Score

A 0–1000 rating of how well someone plays their heroes, from the public match history. Every match is compared with matches on the same hero and of similar length: souls, last hits and denies per minute (economy), kills and assists per minute (fighting) and deaths per minute (survival). A model trained on several hundred thousand recent player-matches learns how much each category decides games; on matches it never saw, it picks the winner correctly far more often than chance (AUC about 0.85). Your Score is a recency-weighted average of your last 30 matches in 30 days, pulled toward 500 when there are few of them, and needs at least 10.

What it isn't: a rank estimate. Matchmaking puts you against players of your own rank, so per-minute stats look similar at every rank, and the Score barely correlates with rank. Read it as "how much you carried your games", not "how good you are compared with everyone".
